The summer holidays are here, the temperatures are up and, for a few weeks at least, our regular Young Ballerz Basketball classes are taking a well-earned break.
While our weekly sessions may not be running during the summer holidays, that doesn’t mean the basketball has to stop completely!
The summer break is a great opportunity for children to get outside, stay active and keep practising some of the skills they have developed throughout the year.
Basketball is one of the easiest sports to practise away from organised sessions. If you have access to a basketball and a little bit of space, there is plenty you can do. Dribbling, passing, shooting and simple ball-handling exercises can all help children stay active while keeping a basketball in their hands.
Even 15 or 20 minutes of practice can make a difference.
However, with the warmer weather we've been experiencing across the UK, it is important to be sensible.
Being active is important, but during particularly hot days children shouldn't be pushed to exercise for long periods in direct sunshine.
If your child wants to practise basketball over the summer, try to choose cooler parts of the day, such as the morning or early evening. Take regular breaks, make sure they have plenty of water available and find some shade when needed.
Sometimes the best decision on an extremely hot day is simply to put the basketball down and try again when it's cooler!
The aim should be to keep children active while making sport enjoyable and safe.
Basketball continues to offer a fantastic way for children to get active, learn new skills and become part of a team.
At Young Ballerz Basketball, we're proud to play our part in grassroots basketball in the UK, introducing children to the sport from a young age and creating an environment where beginners are welcome.
Children don't need previous basketball experience to get started with us. Our sessions are designed to help players develop at their own pace, building their confidence, coordination, basketball skills and understanding of the game.
For us, grassroots basketball isn't just about finding the next great player. It's about getting more children picking up a basketball and enjoying the sport.
Before we know it, the school holidays will be over and our children's basketball classes will be back for the new September term.
If your child has been asking to try basketball, September is the perfect time to get involved. A new term means a fresh start, and there will be plenty of other children walking through the doors who are new to basketball too.
Young Ballerz Basketball offers sessions for children of different ages and abilities across our growing network of locations.
And the best way to find out whether your child enjoys it?
Come and give basketball a try with a FREE trial session.
With September approaching, we'd recommend getting booked in early, particularly for our busier classes.
Whether your child already loves basketball or has never picked up a basketball before, we'd love to welcome them onto court.
Enjoy the rest of the summer, stay active, stay sensible in the heat – and we'll see you back on court in September!
